LOL I once pulled a good trick on my brother. I went into the loo and sprinkled water on the seat knowing he would be going in after me... You should have heard the Prat yell. Mum did not think it funny at all--I did get a telling off. At the same time, no one ever told brother what I had done to him....

When you flush the toilet, the surge of the water sprays out miniscule particles up to two metres from the toilet. Among these particles are bits of urine and faeces that will naturall remain in your toilet between bleaching. So basically, if you don't put the seat down before you flush, you could be spraying s.hit all over your bathroom... which could land on your toothbrush.... Eww! Oh, and also because it keeps the smell at bay and it looks nicer with the seat down :-)

Primarily, you should close the toilet (seat and LID) completely before you flush to keep out the germ-filled airborne mist that results from the flushing. This germy mist settles on everything around the toilet (your toothbrush, clothes, countertops, etc.) You can get seriously ill from fecal-matter contamination.

Secondly, closing the toilet completely keeps things from falling into the toilet. Have you ever had to retrieve your toothbrush, hairbrush/comb or cellphone from the toilet? Not fun.

Thirdly, if you have kids around, it keeps them from possibly drowning in the toilet (they're top-heavy) and playing in the water.

Finally, it keeps pets out of the water.

We don't do it to annoy you men. It's just proper etiquette (and more sanitary).

Actually Jim, I don't nag when a guy doesn't put the toilet seat and I don't always leave the toilet seat down myself so quit nagging! ;-P

Because I have a one-year-old in the house with scuba-diving aspirations!

(He also recently sneaked into the bathroom and filled our open toilet with 9 rolls of toilet paper out of the cupboard! Reason enough?)

Ive never understood this either , if i leave seat down then flush it , the water then splashes onto the seat and looks like I've peed on it and my mum and sister used to go ape.
Also if i leave it down one of my brothers would just pee without lifting seat , so seems more sensible to leave it up,
Never understood what it is girls don't like about it being up as at least they then know it is clean and hasn't been peed on by neanderthal man?

I reckon it's the resposibility of the user, i always leave it up and make no apologies for this, if my other half does not wish to sit on a wet toilet seat then it's up to her to raise it after use, it's a win win situation for blokes really
