There are several wineries in Lebanon, but the most famous by far -- and no doubt this is the wine that your friend mentioned -- is Chateau Musar, and its wine should be available in any good wine shop anywhere. It is a cult wine with devoted fans -- and those that are not so keen.

It is a red blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault, Grenache and some local grapes. It is very distinctive, there is vintage variation in the blend and can be great differences in flavor.

Musar is owned by the Hochar family and Serge Hochar, son of the founder, is credited with making Musar an international star and he was named Decanter Magazines Wine Man of the Year in 1984.

Despite the vineyards being located in the Beka'a valley and grape picking frequently being interupted by civil war, gunfights and missiles from the areas warring factions, only in one or two years has Musar failed to make a wine.

You should really try to find a bottle of this extraordinary wine, open your mind and prepare to taste a new experience. Who knows -- you may be about to join the cult of Musar!!

Cheers

Chateau Musar is the most famous wine from Lebanon. It's a full bodied red wine which is capable of long term cellaring and has a strong cult following around the world.
