Plasma vs LCD

The ADVANTAGES of Plasma over LCD are:

1. Larger screen size availability.

2. Better contrast ratio and ability to render deeper blacks.

3. Better color accuracy and saturation.

4. Better motion tracking (little or no motion lag in fast moving images).

The DISADVANTAGES of Plasma vs LCD include:

1. Plasma TVs are more susceptible to burn-in of static images.

2. Plasma TVs generate more heat than LCDs, due to the need to light of phosphors to create the images.

3. Does not perform as well at higher altitudes.

4. Shorter display life span (about 30,000 hours or 8 hrs of viewing a day for 9 years) than LCD. However, screen life span is improving to as high as 60,000 hours. due to technology improvements.

LCD television ADVANTAGES over Plasma include:

1. No burn-in of static images.

2. Cooler running temperature.

3. No high altitude use issues.

4. Increased image brightness over Plasma.

5. Longer display life (about 60,000 hours - at which time all you may need to do is replace the light source, not the entire set). This can vary according other environmental and use factors.

6. Lighter weight (when comparing same screen sizeds) than Plasma counterparts.

DISADVANTAGES of LCD vs Plasma televisions include:

1. Lower contrast ratio, not as good rendering deep blacks.

2. Not as good at tracking motion (fast moving objects may exhibit lag artifacts) - However, this is improving.

3. Not as common in large screen sizes above 42-inches (although the number is growing).

4. Although LCD televisions do not suffer from burn-in susceptibility, it is possible that individual pixels on an LCD televisions can burn out, causing small, visible, black or white dots to appear on the screen. Individual pixels cannot be repaired, the whole screen would need to be replaced at that point, if the individual pixel burnout becomes annoying to you.

5. LCD televisions are typically more expensive than equivalent-sized Plasma televisions, especially when comparing EDTV Plasmas to HDTV-LCD Televisions.

Plasma flat panel TVs are okay. These will be the cheapest flat panels you can buy but they have many issues.
- they over heat. If you place one over the fireplace, you'll regret it. this is how most plasmas are killed. the heat from the fireplace basically fries the television.
- They have a glass front which is HIGHLY reflective. If you have many windows in the room, shy away from plasma.
- They have issues with color bleeding which make them kinda fuzzy up close.
- They still have burn in problems. don't get one if you play a lot of video games or use it as a large computer monitor.

Plasmas produce 150-240 lumens. (Brightness)

LCD panels produce 380-430 lumens. CLEARLY BRIGHTER.

LCD flat panels are the sharpest and best television you can buy. They have all the benefits of plasma with none of the cons. They are an incredible picture with no burn in, they don't produce a lot of glare and they work well in well lit rooms. HOWEVER, they are also the most expensive. LCD's and plasmas last just about 25-30 years now.

Get an LCD flat panel if you can afford it. Trust me, you won't regret it. The only down side is that a 46" is the largest you can get at a reasonable price.

LCDs use a layer of electrically responsive crystals that can be altered to vary the spectrum of light shining through at various locations on the screen.

Plasma televisions use gases like xenon and argon to create their pictures.

Both LCDs and newer plasma televisions have comparable life spans. The LCD is purported to last several years longer, but both units will last for decades. Also, the picture quality with both of these units is about the same. Some LCDs provide a more crisp resolution, but on the whole there is little difference. Finally, newer generations of plasma televisions have reduced power consumptions comparable to that of LCDs. This previous advantage was corrected from the power vacuum first-generation plasma units.

Plasmas use gas and Lcd liquid crystal, plasmas are cheaper especially for a large model Lcd have smoother resolution but the screen can be dark, I would go for a plasma myself as repair costs are less and theres not much difference in quality also make sure it has a built in reciever if you have no surround sound system.
