Where do you start? With the lack of control and discipline? With the administrations greed and lust after new buildings before new text books? With the new trend of "entertaining" and "engaging" the students instead of actually teaching them what they need to be prepared for college or work? Since when does a 7th grader need make a book report into an art project? Why do they need to "surf the net" to find information for a report for science? What happened to old fashioned research...or encyclopedias? Or hey, how do you use a library? Better yet, do your children know how to study?
In many ways the education of our children is suffering unnecessarily...our schools are under-funded with the constant threat of the "no child left behind" act...you score low on "the test" and you loose money...how does that work for you? No common sense there at all. Forcing the property owner to pay taxes for the schools is STUPID. They should drop the property tax for the schools and add a flat 1% to the Income tax to go automatically to the school district in which you live. Then everyone shares the expense and our children win. We need to really overhaul the whole public school system. And Politicians should have NOTHING to do with it. Every time a politician gets anywhere near the schools they just make it worse!
Frankly I think that if you hold a postion with the board of education you should live within your district...and your children should be in the schools. It's all about investment. And new business'es should not be given tax deferals that effect the funding for the school district.
Angry? Disgusted? Disappointed? Dismayed? These don't even begin to describe my feelings...The community needs to be involved, the parents need to be involved, business needs to be involved, colleges & universitites need to be involved...our children are our future!

Schools are a reflection of society. Teachers are overwhelmed and underpaid. Parents send the best they have to school; they don't keep the good ones at home and send the others. When some of the things that are now excepted and not questioned in society are fixed(drugs, alcohol abuse, child abuse, unemployment, crime, unwed mothers) you will see more emphasis on learning and less on fixing broken kids with all of the problems that they bring to school. How many households(parents) truly teach their kids that obtaining an education is valuable?? How many parents spend more money on buying their kid a grill or some rims or some sound system for their car than they do something that would further their child's intelligence (books, tutoring, camps)??
We live in the "me" generation, sometimes called the "microwave society"....we want it now and we don't want to have to put forth any effort to obtain what we want.....To become educated you have to make an investment of time and efffort and give your kids the supportive environment that will allow them to succeed.

That it's publicly funded. That there is almost no accountability. That teachers have to be politically correct. That teachers have to have everything approved by their superiors. That teachers cannot do anything about student violence and gangs. That gangs can have more power over students than teachers.
But most of all, that we keep spending more and more money on education, and we haven't learned that money doesn't fix the problems.

I think we need to look at the lack of after school help we are giving our children. The schools only place the seed and guide the children. Its up to the parents to ensure the homework and projects are complete. When both parents started working the blame started at this point, as the lack of QUALITY FAMILY TIME has been lost.
