It's probably different for everyone.
My best guess is that she's trying the find the words to say back. It can be one of several reasons why it's taking so long:
1. She's flattered and she is too nervous to answer right away.
2. She's shocked and is trying to figure out why you just said that and if it for real or not.
3. She's shy and that's the first time someone has said that to her and she's at a loss for words.
4. She doesn't beleive you and is trying to find a smart comeback.
5. She's likes you "as a friend" and doesn't want to say something to hurt your feelings, becasue she really like s being your friend.
6. She's grossed out and is trying to find someting not too mean to say.
7. She's trying to find another subject to talk about because you just made the room seem smaller and less comfortable.
8. She's figured that she now has you in her trap and is thinking of what she can do next to get you to give her something expensive.
9. She's thinking of what she wants her wedding dress to look like.
10. She wasn't paying attention when you said that and she's trying to figure it out by the silence and see if you will give her a clue by the next thing you say.
Good luck with it buddy.

Some become quiet because they are shy, others embarassed, and others may be thinking "where is going with this", its not hard to read a woman, you just have to make a little effort, and you'll see why she has become quiet....OH! and others are just uncomfortable with compliments, until they get to know you, of course....can't imagine that one though...but it happens

Sometimes it's hard to believe, accept, or wonder if there is some motive. I think girls are much harder on themselves and have a hard time taking such compliments. But doesn't mean you shouldn't stop saying it if you mean it.
I think younger ladies are more likely to do that. Almost like they have a hard time accepting compliments from guys. But if a girlfriend had said it it would have been thanks.

ITs not what u say, but how u say it.

she proply thinks your creepy. no joke.
theres alot u can do to get better with women. if telling a girl she was pretty got u the girl. then ever1 would be doing it.
theres too much info and not enough space/time. so, ill just give u a TIP.
Next time say this:
YOU:" Hey, you know what,.... u got very pretty eyes......but dont get a big head. :)
Note: the last part was said with a smile

Yikes..Unfortunately for your question...Each woman is a completely different individual-therefore- where as one goes quiet in contemplation, the next might go quiet in embarassment, or maybe she's just plain shy...To get the REAL answer to this question...ASK THE WOMAN YOU COMPLEMENTED WHY SHE DID IT!!!Happy hunting....

i'll be honest, it takes some time to process coz i ask myself a million questions. is he being sincere? what does he want from me? is he just saying it because its a fact and he needed to express it? i always wonder what will come next, is it a way to butter me up so you can try your luck with me? you know, stuff like that... then i say thank you.
maybe this might not apply to the other females.

She may be afraid it's just a line.....if you say that she's funny, pretty, and you love spending time with her, she'll probably respond with a "thanks"...woman dont want to think that someone's spending time with them soley for the way she looks..

She stops to wonder if the guy likes her or is just being nice and making a compliment. Once she decides, then she'll respond accordingly.
