My children download music and burn it to cd's. I'm thinking this is illegal. Please give me the full details on this issue.

Thanks,
Tpad

In Canada file sharing is legal as long as they are not selling it. This was a supreme court decision about one month ago. It covers songs, videos, movies and software. Just don't try to make money off of it. You can't even burn a copy for a friend and ask him to pay to cover the cost of the disk.
In US it is illegal.
Not sure about anywhere else.

They aren't downloading "FROM" any Peer to Peer application.

They are downloading from other people's computers, and, they could do it in any of 1,000 ways, including Virtual Network Tunnel, in Microsoft (talk about your 'World Class' Pirate, Microsoft hadtheir probation revoked, and a NEW three year probation started, October 2006!!!).

They are going to do it, you can't stop them. So, show them the safest ways!
Don't use Limewire, which has Blocks and it is suspected, some backdoors fo TRACKING after the RIAA used some heavy scum lawyers to threaten the programmers... So, they all moved OFF Shore and serve the new, full, FREE FROSTWIRE!

Frostwire is included in the LiveCDrom, http://pclinuxos.com
and really should be run behind a firewall, such as http://ipcop.org

It all downloads and runs upto 50X faster.

And, the majority of us use P2P to grab some of the FREE and Open Source games, programs, applications, Linux Distros, and the huge repository of Common Cause music, art, and works!

The short answer is no. You children are receiving music from other people who have either legally or illegally obtained music. Music that is bought is for personal use and is not allowed to be shared unless it is free of copyright. Another reason that makes it illegal is that the source of the music is usually CDs. Changing the format from CD to electronic form also violates copyright laws. I would suggest that your children start using Yahoo's LaunchCast radio program or a similar streaming radio feed.

No it's not legal. It's one of those "it's okay until you get caught" types of things. Sooner or later they'll probably download a nice virus to your computer too.
