CDs are spun fast and DVDs even faster. The data on these discs is very tightly packed in rings and a very precise laser mechanism is needed to read the data reliably.

Sticking stickers, or anything else for that matter, on a CD or DVD will cause the disc to vibrate as its no longer balanced and will cause all sorts problems reading the data on the disc.

In tapes and videos the actual media was in a protective casing/cartridge which you could stick stickers on. CDs and DVDs are more durable so don't need a cartridge like a mini-disc had, their equivalent is the case the disc comes in which of course you can stick stickers too ;)

Hope that helps!

Because you don't need them.

I've seen labels peel up at the edges on CD's and DVD's.

I use Blue TDK +R's for my video work and I still use a Staedtler Permanent Lumocolor to write on them. I've used a Sharpie as well.

Stay clear of labels.

Cassettes and Minidiscs have a tough outer shell that protects the recording medium inside. This outer shell doesn't move and is ideal for labels.

There's no such protection for a CD or DVD disc.

CD Labels are available separately in kits. They are not so reliable as they used to be with today's high speed drives. You might want to take a look at a LightScribe CD drive from HP. With one of these and the correct flavour of CD-R you can flip the CD over and write a label direct onto the CD surface with the supplied software.

because labels on these cd's can cause them not to play unless done professionally so it's best to get a cd writing pen.

the weight difference between a cd r and a cd rw means that a cd rw will not usually play in a normal cd player. putting a label on a cd r has the same effect.
