The truth is chocolate contains theobromine that is toxic to dogs in sufficient quantities. This is a xanthine compound in the same family of caffeine, and theophylline.

Toxic Levels

The good news is that it takes, on average, a fairly large amount of theobromine 100-150 mg/kg to cause a toxic reaction. Although there are variables to consider like the individual sensitivity, animal size and chocolate concentration.

Chocolate has caffene in it. Caffene accelerates a dog's heart to dangerous levels. It has the same effect as those really strong energy drinks do on people.

We have a chihuahua that got into some chocolate. I swear that she was running around the house at about 30 mph.

you can feed you dog sweeten or candy chocolate, not unsweetened,it hasn't been prosses completely and that's what kills them,I have 3 small dogs and I feed them snickers,m&ms,kisses, peanut butter cups, mind you not a lot,but as a treat, vets say no chocolate, because someone might give one unsweeten, the same kind you use in brownies, you see it in the cake ile it says unsweeten chocolate,I was told the same until my male and female rat terrier ate a easter basket full of chocolate candy,I thought they were going to die, rushed them to the vet, that was 5 years ago,and thats how I found out, seance then I have met dozens of people who feed their dogs candy

i guess their system has some sort of reaction to it and it makes em sick....you have to remember its a dog not a baby...so if the vet says no chocolate who are you to argue with experts.
