Radio waves are a means of sending information. To do this, you need to "encode" information in the radio waves. How do you do this? Well, you change them. If the receiving unit (like a radio) understands what these changes mean, then it can "decode" that information and do something with it (like reproduce music).

Radio waves - like any other waves - have two main characteristics: amplitude and frequency. Think of waves of water on a pond. The amplitude is the height of the waves; the frequency is how fast those waves come one after another.

In Amplitude Modulation (AM) radio, the way that you encode information in the radio wave is by keeping the frequency of electromagnetic waves exactly the same and you change the amplitude. For instance, if the amplitude is x one moment, and then 2x the next, that means something, and an AM radio will know what it means (and turn it into some sound).

In Frequency Modulation (FM) radio, the way you encode information is to keep the amplitude of the radio waves exactly the same, but to vary the frequency. The way in which you vary their frequency tells the receiver something, and an FM radio will turn it into sound.

frequency modulation in general means changing the frequency of the carrier signal with respect to the amplitude of the message signal.frequency may come under any range be it RF or MICROWAVE.
modulation secures the intactness of the message signal.

If you want total details about communications engineering, you should probably consider enrolling in a four year degree program.
