I was studying for a final at 2:30 AM and could understand the words the words from my duplex neighbor's TV. I realize that the TV is on that wall, but dang.

I'm begining to wonder if this guy can put two and two together. He comes home from the bar at 2:00 every night and throws things around like a caveman (no relation to the insurance company). Every picture of him on Facebook and Myspace involves alcohol. I once had to call the cops to keep him from physically beating a woman.

Don't like it? Advise him/her of that fact. They don't change, reciprocate with noises of your own during the day perhaps since they may be night owls and sleep during the day. Maye they'll get the message. If not use earplugs and find a new place to live. Landlords won't do anything if the rent is on time every month and cops will only harass them and then leave. They can't arrest them for TV noises if they are living there and pay their rent. But if you threaten to leave and the next renter on the other side does the same, the landlord may get the message and evict said tenant in order to keep two more. Or at least weigh in on the ordeal.

Yeah, so my guess is he has no idea that he is that loud and that the walls are that thin. I would start knocking back. Or you can call the landlord and complain. If the landlord does nothing start calling the cops about nucanse or disturbing the peace or waht ever.

If you can catch him when he doesn't have whiskey breath, nicely level with him. (Trying to reason with a drunk is one wasted effort, as you already know) Explain that passing your class is a big priority in your life right now and his cooperation would be appreciated. If that doesn't work, call your landlord and explain why you are breaking your lease. Then move on down the line, my friend, and find a new address. I mean, do you really want to live near someone who would hit a woman? Think about it.

There are these noise-masking machines they make a "white noise" and you can find them online. It is annoying, I need quiet when I study as well and sometimes the smallest things affect my focus.

Yes you should, but if you're concerned about hearing loss then maybe you should consult a physician
