Ringworm, also known as Tinea, is a contagious (excluding tinea versicolor) fungal infection of the skin. Contrary to its name, ringworm is not caused by a worm.

Ringworm is very common, especially among children, and may be spread by skin-to-skin contact, as well as via contact with contaminated items such as hairbrushes. Ringworm spreads readily, as those infected are contagious even before they show symptoms of the disease. Participants in contact sports such as wrestling have a risk of contracting the fungal infection through skin-to-skin contact.

Ringworm is also a common infection in domestic animals, especially cattle and cats. Humans can contract ringworm from animals; cats, cattle and dogs are common sources owing to close association with humans.

Ringworm is a fungus infection. It gets its name as it forms a small circle on your skin. It is HIGHLY contagious and can be spread to others living in your house so you need to use different towels when having a bath/wash/shower etc. Do not even use the same sponges or soap as anyone else and keep these away from others to avoid them using them accidently. To get rid of Ringworm. you need to get an antifungal cream from the Doctor. Its easy to apply and the fungus should start to dissapear within 2- 3 weeks of using the cream although in some cases it can take up to several weeks. You can catch it from cats or out in the garden, or from someone who has it as it is contagious and can be passed from person the person as easy as it is too catch a cold.

Topical antifungal drugs containing miconazole and clotrimazole, available by prescription or over the counter, are used to clear up the infection. A folk remedy for ringworm is a 1:1 solution of cider vinegar and water. Another alternative is 2 drops tea tree oil mixed with an ounce of water. In cats and cattle, sulfurated lime rinses are often used to treat ringworm. Enilconazole, as a rinse, is an effective ringworm treatment available in many countries for treating animals. Fungal infections may take a while to clear up.

Terbinafine is highly effective for Tinea corporis. It treats itching, burning, cracking, and scaling that accompany this condition. It cures most ringworm except the types affecting the nails or scalp, which are very difficult to treat.

Griseofulvin is a traditional drug used to treat ringworm in both animals and man. It can be very effective, but may produce side effects.

Ringworm is caused by Tinea circinata and it is a fungal infection. There are many good OTC medications available and usually the itch is relieved rapidly. It is contagious and spreads by contact. So be careful with contact to others. Do not use steroids as they may relieve the itch but do nothing to clear the infection. Contaminated clothing may be washed with a mild solution of bleach...be careful with colored clothing. If you are unable to find an OTC drug, cleansing the area with bleach will cure the infection but it takes longer. I do not recommend using griseofulvin as that drug has side effects as it is a systemic, not a local drug, with long term fungal infection of the toe-nails, griseofulvin is used but blood chemistries have to be taken periodically...stay with simple medications. In medicine, we learn that you use the simplest form of application first as there are risk with oral medications but less risks than with intramuscular medication.
