As much as people want to believe love is enough... love is not enough for your dog.
They need socialization, training, exercise and consistency.
Every year people go out and adopt a dog or buy a puppy thinking they can just give it love and it will turn out great, but then every year thousands get surrendered to shelters or simply abandoned because the dogs engage in unacceptable behaviors such as house-soiling, jumping up on people, chewing up furniture, digging, barking or whining - all behaviors that could easily have been prevented in the first place had owners known what goes into raising a well-behaved pet.
For free educational materials online, please go to www.openpaw.org and look for a pamphlet entitled, 'The First Two Weeks'.
Things you need before you get your little bundle of joy:
Appropriate sized crate (pup should be able to stand up and turn around, not run back and forth) - this is for housetraining purposes
Set up a long term confinement area for when you have to be away for longer periods that he/she can hold it especially if a puppy (this can be closed off bathroom or kitchen area with non-absorbent flooring)
One corner should have bed and water bowl
Opposite corner should have potty pad
Kongs (feed the dog/pup out of kongs for the first few weeks to develop an appropriate chew habit)
Nylabones/Marrow bones etc. (again, for them to develop an appropriate chew habit and also to keep them happily occupied while you're away and therefore prevent barking, whining and separation anxiety problems)
Flat Collar & 6ft Leash (not retractable)
Easy Walk or Sensation Harness if it hasn't been trained not to pull on leash yet
Babygates or other methods of confining your new pup/dog to certain areas at a time.

You need to get him food, and bowls. A good leash and collar, Plenty of safe chewy toys. Call a vet and get an appointment asap to check for any health problems such as fleas, worms, esp heart worm or any other medical problems. You need to house train him and be consistent with this or he will mess up your place. take him for plenty of walks and play. Do not leave him unattended in a car (ever) I hear too many horror stories. Do not feed him/her table food and don't leave him/her outside when it's too cold or too warm. Make sure you have a fenced in yard if he will go outside a lot, because people are mean and may try to hurt him. Get ID tags, and most importantly, this dog will be your loyal friend until the day he dies. Treat him with respect and give him all the love you got...

Don't throw any of your old newspapers out, believe me they come in handy, place them around his bed at night, make cleaning up any accident easier, also a hot water bottle makes it not such a wrench being away from mum, and cuddle him a lot to form a strong bond, choose your vet carefully, one you can get along with and trust, before you get the puppy, and ask for advice sheets, they will have all the information you will need, remember a dog is for life not just for Christmas, make absolutely sure this is what you want.

A dog bed suitable for his size, might be an idea to get 2, as a small puppy could get lost in a bed that is for a labrador!!! suitable food, a lead, collar, maybe even a small halti that will help when lead training. toys.
Brushes that are suitable for the breed of dog, a good thing to get for a puppy who is just leaving its litter-mates is an item that will smell of them, maybe take an old jumper for them to roll in, it will help the puppy to sleep better when you first get it.
Thought the most important thing you can give your dog is all the love in the world, as it will repay you with the same!

You need food and water. Maybe a pillow, a collar, a leash(you have to walk him everyday.) food and water dishes, either a chain that you can put into the ground or a kennel, for when your not home. If he starts to going potty in the house, use a neawspaper and swat him on the butt and say "no" in a stern voice

Before you get an animal you should look into looking after them. It would be stupid not to as you could end up killing the puppy.
