Ive been with my fiance for only 10 months, but Ive known him over a year and a half. I am crazy about him, he's a truly wonderful man. I know that some of you may think thats too soon, but please keep those remarks to yourself. Our engagement will be official this weekend - we are going to atlanta and he'll propose there; we already decided to get engaged but he wants to still propose, my ring came in yesterday and i havent seen it yet!! Anyway I always wanted about a year for an engagement, because I think it should be a time to be enjoyed, not stressed. I want more than anything to be married to him but I also want to enjoy our engagement. My parents are fairly well off and we plan on an amazing wedding. I want to enjoy every aspect of planning it. I want to get married on July 7th, 2008. Is a year and a half too long? For those that have been engaged for a while how long does it really take to thoughtfully plan out a big wedding. Any thoughts are appreciated!!

I have been married and divorced before..... my first engagement came after only 9-10 months of being with this person. Things were going okay... and we got married, it was sort of a small wedding with all the fun and excitement.. I pulled it off in only 3 weeks. Dress, fittings, cake, food, flowers, EVERYTHING... While working and going to school. NOT TO DISCOURAGE YOU but that did not last. We seperated about a year after the wedding.. and not because we were married to quickly but because he saw the world with a different pair of eyes than I did. BUT since then I have met and fallen deeply in love with a wonderful man! We are coming up on our 2 year anniversary... we are engaged and are getting married in Jan 2007. So no I do not think that your engagement is too soon or too long...........if you want a truely extravigant wedding... it will take some time to make sure it all goes smoothly.... take your time....... and start NOW!!!!

Congrats on the engagement... and I wish happiness to you both.

I think 3 years of dating before the engagement is good, then another year for the engagement. But what ever works for you, right? It's really depends on the individual couple. If you have to ask, then maybe there's something wrong..... Why would an engagement ever be too long? Arent you going to be married for your whole life? If so, how is a year and a half, long?!
IF you have to ask what others think, or even say for others to keep their opinions to themselves...then thats what truely concerns me with this question.
I also suggest splurging more on the honeymoon instead of the wedding.
Usually, the more time you have to plan, the more time you have to stress. And the bigger the wedding is, the more stress there will be. Instead, image planning a huge honeymoon, not so stressful, huh?......
Whatever happens, i wish you the best of luck!

1st of all,july 7th 2008 is a monday.
is that your birthday or your anniversary?or why do u want to get married at the beginning of the week?
if you want a very lavish and expensive wedding with lots of people in attendance a saturday or friday or thursday would probably be much better.
am currently engaged as well and in my country and church the general belief is that you should be engaged for a period of at least six months.
which is what i am doing.
most of my siblings and close friends are married and from having been in the thick of things,by planning from start to finish and also been a chief brides amid a few times i can tell you authoritatively that 6 months is ample time to plan and have a very elaborate wedding do.
i thing a year and a half is rather too long for this since you say your family can afford it.
get a wedding planner involved as they are very helpful and remove all stress from you an dthey do all the run around, you just tell them what you want, they usually have good tips on cakes, venues, decorators, halls caterers etc.
good luck gal!

Depends how you define engaged. I'd lived with my boyfriend for 9 years and we had two children and I kept saying I would marry him eventually but never quite got around to it. He got fed up with waiting. One day I turned up outside the registry office to discover it was my own wedding I'd been invited to. So if engaged is definitely planning to get married, for me it was about 10 minutes. Worked out OK. That was nearly 14 years ago, we're still together.

Was engaged 8 months, knew him three years, dated for two of these. Don't plan a wedding farther than a year away; that's just crazy.
