A lot of weapon systems are nicknamed "peacemaker", also ICBM and B-36...
I think that this name can take its origins from the famous "Calgacus' speech" written by Latin historian Tacitus.
Calgacus was a Caledonian leader against Roman Army. His speech was to rouse his troops to the battle.
In this text he says that Romans "make the desert and they call it Peace".
So a weapon called "peacemaker" is supposed to be so powerful to destroy all, to "make desert" and so you win and you can call that desert "Peace".
