I really love the "Barkless" dog--Basenji, and am having serious thought for buying a puppy. But of course, I have to do some research on it before making final decision. I checked out many sites and books, they all have the same conclusion--it's a breed known for being aloof, very dignified, and strong-willed...plus, it takes a lot of time and skills to effectively train this breed of dog; but even intensive and effective training won't guarantee well-behaveness...

I had a Basenji mix. Took her to obedience school where she did not do well - even the instructor yelled at her. They are very hard to train. She had attitude, did not like the second dog I brought into the home. She got mean as she got older. Fireworks terrified her and made her act nuts.
She died 3 years ago and I miss her dearly but I would never get another one like her again.

yes clever little fellows who always push the limits- that's a Basenji. I will also mention the barkless bit does not mean silent. They can whine, howl & make a vareity of other sounds and some are quite noisy. The new african import lines even have some dog that bark.

Hi Joan Crawford!! Yes.....Is Basenji very difficult to keep and train...
Basenji may be ... are in for a treat.
They do require alot of attention, and they will do negative things to get it if you ignore her.
This breed is fast as lightning on their feet.
They loves to chase the cars that go by your house.
Basenjis are quite stubborn.
They loves to snuggle and be close to your.
They do love to run, get her into Lure Coursing if possible after 1 year of age.

Basenji --- And be ready to be amused -- A LOT!!!--- Your hands FULL of fun and love!
Think , do your choice...

a friend of mine raises these and she doesn't recommend them to very many people, she says that they are very aloof and determined and they are more like cats than dogs, very bad about jumping up on furniture and kitchen tables, etc, WILL NOT go outside when raining
please do some reading before you buy one!
