Is getting cold, hot or is he thirsty? Does he need the loo?

Waking up in the night is normal and we retrain ourselves to fall asleep. Children go through this process too but if something is waking him up - he's overheating or cold, or needs the loo - then it's his body waking him up because it needs some action.

If he's up and down because he needs the loo then cut down the number of drinks near to bedtime. If he's getting cold consider thicker pyjamas and a thinner bedcovering so if he loses the bedcovering he'll still be warm. If he's getting too hot then reduce the number of covers.

Without knowing why he's waking up it's difficult to say but waking up in the night is completely normal. I still do it I just don't call out to my mum!

I don't have an answer for you, but I share your problem. My daughter is on the verge of being 3, and she rarely sleeps through the night. Most of the time she wont even talk to us, just sitts there whining or crying a little. We are still trying to figure out if she is actually waking up or having some sort of night terrors. lately it's been getting better, but a night where she wakes at least 4 times is normal. Sometimes I just call out to her and tell her to go to sleep. Sometimes it works, sometimes it dosent.
good luck with yours.....
p.s. my son @ 8months seems to be starting to have the same problem.

Its perfectly normal for a 3 yr old to wake up 2-4 times mid-night. You haven't mentioned what he does during these breaks. try to soothe him down in some way that you use normally if he just wakes up; feed him if he is hungry and help him if he need any....
NEVER introduce TV at this age. TV is not at all a baby sitter. Moreever it could actually spoil his sleep and habits to introduce it as a sleep inducer..
Rather try some soft and soothing music at a very low volume..

My 4.5 yr old girl still gets up almost every night. Most times, it's just to make sure mama's still home and not at work. She's getting over that now that I work nights and she's home with my mom. My boyfriend and I are hoping that she outgrows this before we move in together over the summer. My girl typically goes right back to sleep as soon as she knows that she's not alone. We went through the fear of the dark phase, the have-to-potty phase, and the need-a-drink phase. They all pass. Just remember that if you let your child get in bed with you, you will have the worst time getting your bed back.

Are you me?

No, I don't think this is normal. At least, I hope not. Ever since mine has discovered fear a few months ago, it's been like that. We tried putting a gate up, but he knows how to unlatch it.

Here's what I have learned that helps. We exhaust him. We signed him up for gymnastics, we run like mad around the house, we play ball, we bounce on the couch with the cushions off....anything that burns energy.

Also, is he napping still? I started shortening his naps and making the earlier as well. This has helped somewhat as well.

What is he doing when he gets up? Is he wandering? Is he scared?

I feel your pain!

Hi there!
Well my stepson used to do that everynight it drove us nuts, I think for him it was a comfort thing.
My son slept like a log the only thing we could figure it out was that my boy had a tv in his room and radio. He had that on all night. So we wen tout and bought a tv for my stepson and you know what he slept all night. If he woke up he'd look at the tele for two sec's then fall asleep again. Its worth a go.
Best of luck to ya I know how tiring it can be.

i would say it probally is. my daughter has been waking up at night, and its usually because she's cold or too hot. sometimes, i think she has a bad dream and wants to curl up in bed with me. just go with your gut instinct, and if it continues for a long time, i'd call a dr.
