Only your dentist and hygienist know for sure whether there are no issues going on in your mouth. You should see your hygienist every 6 months for a proper cleaning and at that time she will also measure your gums to make sure they are healthy and that you are free from any periodontal disease. At these cleanings, the dentist will also come in and do his exam which will also include an oral cancer exam. About once a year your xrays should be taken ( usually just a set of bitewing films ) This will help to detect any decay in the tooth and also in between the teeth that would be otherwise hard to detect by visual examining.
About every 3 years a panoramic film should be taken....this will allow your dental provider to see the entire oral cavity and all surriounding bone ( alveolar, etc...) This will help to detect any growths that could be something.
With that said, if you are free of periodontal disease ( gum disease ) and those patients usually have to have special c leanings a little more frequently to restore to a healthy gum state, you should be fine with cleanings every 6 months.
The problem I run into most with my patient's is that they don't see a dentist for years thinking everything is fine because they don't have toothaches and so on that when they do come in they have neglected their mouths and sometimes are in secondary and advanced stages of periodontal disease. There are other things that can go wrong besides decay.
Remember, you only get one set of adult teeth!! and you should take the best care of them that you can.

never, one more thing if you are away from Tobacco, drink, having a habit to clenase the teeth daily night before going to bed (without applying the tooth paste-----because that too consists flouride ----do not apply, simply rinse your teeth with water)
ahter 44 your teeth might need some cementing to fill the cavities, this time you may approach a good dentist, rather visit a government hospital that would be cheaper with responsibility

Twice a year is good enough. If you have braces you should see them every 4 months.
