He will not beat his addiction successfully unless he recognises he has a problem ,and really wants to over come it.
That is the first thing you both have to realise.
There are medications to help with overcoming the urge to drink and the withdrawals of alcohol.
I would recommend he did the detox in a rehabilitation centre.
The reality is that alcohol detox can be just as horrific as heroin detox.
So your friend needs a safe environment, with trained medical and D&A people to support him
during that initial 4 to 6 weeks.
His counsellor and Doctor, may think he will be able to rehabilitate with help and support in the community after he is clean of the drug [alcohol].
That will include your help!
Rehabilitation is a long rocky road, its a mountain at times, with no where to hold on to.
Making the journey alone is nearly impossible.
But if there is someone the person knows is there for them, the journey is a bit easier.
If you drink ,stop.
Realise this person has a life long medical condition, and there is only one thing that will allow him to maintain his health,no alcohol, and staying right away from the temptation for a long time and the alcohol for ever.

There is no cure for alcoholism. Yes it is a disease but the person has to first be willing to admit they have a problem. After that, the must be willing to do something about it. Several options at that point are treatment centers, AA meetings, reading material about alcoholism and the support of their family and friends as this is a hard disease to overcome. There is also Alanon for friends and family of alcoholics to help you with the issues of alcoholism and the effects it has on those who know an alcoholic and also to help understand what the alcoholic is going through. Good luck...it's a hard road. One day at a time.

I would say AA also but I had a boyfriend that was an alcoholic and I tried many things to get him to stop drinking but nothing worked for him. All I could do was tell him that I care about him and that i don't want to be around him when he drinks. So eventually he stopped. An alcoholic needs to WANT to stop dinking or else it won't work. He never admitted that he was an alocholic until he stopped drinking. You have to have lots of patience to help your friend. It's very difficult! Good Luck!

there is no cure for this disease, it is a lifetime commitment!!
There is only help with AA and the best way to deal with it, is to take it one day at a time.

Steal all his monies and alcohols. Then lock him up in a closet. :3
Or make up a movie that says lies about alcohol...:) Like they put in rat tails or something.
Or just keep him in the closet.
