Meh, to me, it never matters. If I have nothing left to say, or I feel it is pointless to try getting something across to a person, I'll just stop. But yeah, I think that one is more likely to have that accomplished feeling, maybe even the impression that one has "won" an argument, if they have the last word. Why? It's associated with the other party conceding defeat, by failing to make another statement.
...wait, did I just have the last say, on this? *gasp* Did I win??

Someone earlier asked about the first sign and this answer works too. Read about the history of calendars and zodiac. The zodiac constellations were used about two thousand years ago as a calendar in some regions. This was to mark the seasons. Aries marked the vernal equinox or first day of spring. But because of the precession of the equinox, it is now in Pisces. One sign off. The Roman calendar was only ten months in a year. This was changed by adding July and August (named after Roman emperors) pushing the numbered months where they are today. Good links below.

Sometimes silence is the best answer, and the higher road, but most people don't realize this.
"Don't speak unless you can improve the silence."

~Is this what you mean to ask... "Why do people want to have the last word?"
