Babies in womb don't neet oxygen from air as it is already supplied via the blood coming from mother via the umbilical cord. As one can imagine its almost impossible in a natural way to inhale air when there is liquid all around you. Neonates breath first only when they are out of womb and the placenta is cut. They need to be put in a certain position so that their first breath removes all the liquid entraped in their air passage. Babies dont take breath in their mother's womb. They actually dont need to take breath. They take their first breath only after delivery. In the womb they directly get oxygenated blood form mother via umbilical cord , which no longer exists after the delivery.

they get their oxygen from the umbilical cord which connects the baby to the mother's body. the baby doesn't take their first breath of air until after they are out of the mother's body and the cord is cut.

Fetus dont breathe in womb as their lungs are collapsed and no purification / oxygenation occurs in lungs. They get their oxygen through umbilical arteries which through complex arterial and venous circulation gets nourishment and oxygen
