Well, Novus, the reason the teachings are similar to early Christianity is that "the Mormon" church is really the "Church of Jesus Christ" restored back to the earth with the original teachings of Jesus - pure and unadulterated by the nearly 2000 years of groping around for some sort of man-figured clarity of other churches - these religions, also not being led [as they were anciently] by a living prophet.

Without the true spirit of prophecy leading them to Godly truth and revelation, men have been left unto themselves to make what they could of any interpretation of scripture - and for many centuries following Christ, they could not even get near the Bible as well, even to do that.
Being only in hand-written form, only the priest had access to it; it was generally big, and under lock and key.
People had to rely on the priest's interpretation for their 'knowledge'.
On such a sandy foundation, how could one expect that after 2000 years, the current interpretations would be as Jesus taught them???

It was by way of this sandy foundation - that is, a lack of prophetic revelation that God found it necessary to restore the full Gospel and the original truths that Jesus taught.
And thus it was that in 1820, a young lad, by the name of Joseph Smith, was visited upon by the Father and Son in answer to a personal prayer for the truth, to restore these original truths, as Jesus taught them.
Hence the reason that the "Mormon" teachings, or should I say the teachings of the current day 'Church of Jesus Christ" are similar to early Christianity.
With this restoration of original teachings and truth also came a restoration of necessary authority to administer in the associated ordinances of these more perfect teachings - ordinances that lead somewhere - where God, the Father wishes us to be.
Hence, there is a prophet today with just this authority and the divine revelation needed that will provide a foundation no longer sandy, but upon the firm rock, of which Jesus spoke - revelation.

Yes, there was an apostasy. When Christ ascended to Heaven after His resurrection and all the apostles died, there was no one left on earth who held the Priesthood or whom was teaching the complete gospel. It has been changed and changed and added upon and subtracted so many times...That is why the restoration of the foulness of the gospel was so important. It was through Joseph Smith, by the power of Almighty God, that the Priesthood and true and complete gospel were restored to the earth, never to be taken off the earth again. The gospel will be spread to the whole world until the Second Coming when Christ will personally reign upon the earth and it will receive its paradisaical glory!

No, there is no apostasy, as u can see there is a succesion from St. Peter to whom the Church was entrusted, since until now the Catholic Church still stands and is alive as Jesus promised.
