I was born in Australia but my family moved to the US when I was 5, so I pretty much grew up here and did all my schooling here. I'm still an Aussie citizen, I have green card, and I'm thinking about maybe moving back to Aus in a few years. I really want to know what it's like to live there as I feel like I missed out on a lot since we moved when I was so little. I'm currently studying for a Bachelor of Science in Speech Therapy, and after that I plan on going to grad school to get my masters, and then thinking about moving to Australia. I know it's still years off, but I think about it a lot. I was just wondering what the least expensive cities are to live in (I was born in Sydney), and if I would be able to get a job as a speech therapist there even though my degrees are from US Universities. Also, would I earn enough to be able to have a decent living there? I really don't know much about living there, so anything would help me figure out what I want to do. Thanks!

I am sure you will make a good living here as jobs for people with qualifications - especially in your area of study , are available.

It is nice to hear that you want to come here but because you grew up in the US, keep in mind that you will experience culture shock when you arrive. This may be a "westerenised" country but it is NOT the USA. Be prepare to be "disappointed" because you will find the way of life does not operate here like what you are used to or take for granted in the States. We don't have as many cities and not as big as you may have experienced. Things might be a liitle slower and you might not get to have all the mod cons like what you are used to.

But allow yourself to be pulled into the aussie culture. See the beauty of the people in the land of your birth and what this vast country has to offer.

I was not born here but I can tell you - I love this place!

Sydney and melbourne are the most expensive to live in but that is where all the action is.... Rent is not to bad 10 to 15 mins from the city.. You should be able to get a job in your field which would pay quite well over here also. It ia strange that you keep thinking about australia when it was so long ago u lived here.... Best u come and at least check it out for yourself.... There are many people here that came on holiday and choose to make a life here..... Brisbane and Perth are your next bet for cheaper but less qualities....enjoy

The need for speech therapy is more regional than city-based - many of the smaller country centres cannot tempt qualified therapists to regional areas. The pros of avoiding major cities far outweigh the cons, Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane and the rest are all within visiting distance - to experience what you missed as a child - go regional!

Welcome home you will have no trouble finding employment Sydney and Melbourne are dreaming about the good old days when they think they are better off. With 36.000 of them coming to Queensland just last year check the stats of Queenslanders going the other way. The only good thing about their delusion is maybe some will stay there. You were born in Sydney so check it out then head north they all do when they wake up ?
