all of the reasons above and then some... abusive, druggies, drinkers, sex offenders, or its just that money is their God.

i mean come on... who would want someone around their kid who is intentionally trying to screw them out of a new pair of shoes?

they hide their income, get 'laid off', say nasty things to the kids, call their mom foul names, etc.

the arrears are owed to the custodial parent (even if that child is grown and getting married by now). so they can run all they like, its still on their credit report, by all three major reporting agencies.

then, there is this somewhat new company... thats what http://www.supportkids.com/ is for. they take a chunk of the money, but it sure beats a percentage of nothing. they sick them worse then the IRS and almost always get something. they attach leins on homes, personal property, drag them to court repeatedly, etc.

yes, there are options today.. for the sake of children.

It's impossible to make a sweeping generlisation about specific cases but I can think of lots of reasons why a woman might be unwilling or unable to track down the father of her child.

for example
If he's violent,
If he's married with another family and her finding him may cause pain to his other, quite innocent children.
If she doesn't know who he is, or sufficient details about him to track him down.
If she knows there's little or no chance of him having any money anyway.
If he's abroad it might be very difficult and expensive to track him down.
If it was one of those stupid accidents and she doesn't want to ruin his life because of a mistake.

I do know people who've been in this situation, but without knowing the details of a case it's impossible and unfair to make a judgement.

My mom is still owed child support for my youngest brother 27. His dad worked for friends who would "fire" him and then re-hire him 3-4 times a year, around Christmas and any other time he got upset with mom. The state is involved and he is unemployed. There are similar stories out there.

Maybe they just don't want to have anything to do with him. Maybe they feel like they don't need anything from him.
If there doing fine on there own and are better off with out him in there and there kids lives then, why should they have to chase him down?

at least that's what I think, but then again I'm happily married to the father of my kids, so I'm no expert on it.

Because as long as fathers aren't paying their child support, mothers don't have to allow them rights as a father.
