OK I disagree with everyone on here. I say the wedding band goes on first because it is the symbol of your marriage and should be closer to your heart - the engagement ring is just an example of your betrothal.

During the ceremony you wear your engagement ring on your right hand. During the exchanging of the rings your husband to be places your wedding ring on your left ring finger. Sometime after that either you or him moves your engagement ring back to your left hand. Tell me why would you want to take off your wedding band to put the engagement ring on first? It just doesn't make sense. The way I said is much more fluid.

The wedding band goes on first, with the engagement ring on overtop.
However, at the ceremony, have your hand bare. You can wear the engagement ring on the other hand, then put it on top of the wedding band later.

The engagement ring is worn until the wedding day. Then it is transfered to the right hand . After the ceremony, and the wedding ring has been placed on your finger, put the engagement ring on top of the wedding ring. The wedding ring goes closest to your heart.

But really it's a matter of preference.

During the ceremony?
The engagement ring should be left at home or in your purse or wherever it's safe until the ceremony ends, unless like me you have it welded to the wedding band before the ceremony.

The band goes closest to your heart ( the inside of your finger) and the engagement ring goes to the outside.

On your wedding day, wear your engagement ring on a finger on your right hand. When you say your vows, which are so important, then the ring is put on by your husband, this ring should never be removed, for to do so destroys that precious moment when it was originally put on. You then can put your engagement ring on after the wedding ring. Happy wedding day.

Remove the engagement ring on the wedding day. Reserve that finger for your wedding band only. After the wedding day, you may put in your engagement ring first then the wedding band.

You wear the engagement ring on your left hand, then the band goes over the top of it. After the ceremony, you switch it so the the band goes on the bottom. If it is a set, get them sodered together before the ceremony so it goes on as one piece.

I was always told the wedding ring goes on first because it puts it closest to you heart. Then the engagement ring.

I think the tradition is to remove the engagement ring for the ceremony then replace it later...again this puts the wedding band closer to the woman's heart because it represents the husband's love which is supposed to be sacred to her heart.
