I got my kitten from the Humane Society just 3 days ago and the day we brought him home he started to sneeze. The next day we noticed some yellow thick discharge coming out of one of his eyes, he was still sneezing and his nose is leaking. The kitten had the same symptoms this morning but tonight his other eye started to leak the same thing and hes been sleeping pretty much all day.

Hi! It sounds as though your new kitten may be suffering from an allergy to something in your home, at best - or worse, he may have an upper respiratory infection that is fatal if not treated. Please take your kitty to the vet for a more throrough and professional diagnosis. Best of luck and I hope your kitten is fine.

Usually if the mucus is clear then it is just a cold. Due to the yellow colour of the mucus i would have to say your kitten has an infection more than anything which may have started as a cold but the kitten was not treated correctly. I suggest you take your kitten to the vet IMMEDIATELY to get antibodics.

If you are unable to get the kitten there immediately then its best to try and clear its eyes and nose with a damp clean cloth as best you can, be sure to wash your hands afterwards and do not touch your own eyes as you may get conjunctivitis.

If you a worried that the kitten is struggling to breathe then the best way to clear inside of the kittens nose, is by putting the kitten in the bathroom while you are having a hot shower. This will help loosen the mucus and clear its nostrils. Infant nasal saline drops also help but can be a little tricky to use with a kitten. If you have time to buy the drops then i suggest you forget the drops and take the kitty straight to the vet.

Good Luck, I hope it all turns out fine. :)

Sounds like kitty has an upper respiratory infection, which can be very common in rescue kitties and the stress of relocation can bring it on. Alot of humane societies offer a free vet visit to a participating vet in the first couple days. See if this applies, or call them to see if they can recommend a vet they use. Simple antibiotics can clear it up in no time.

Hi, your kitties symptoms sound very similar to what my cat had. It is called upper respiratory infection (only in cats, but it is highly contagious). It most likely contracted it at the shelter. Your kitty needs to be taken to the vet right away and started on antibiotics. If not, it will die. After 10 days of anitbiotics, my kitty was good as new. Cost was around $60 because my kitty was so sick, he also needed a shot to help bring his fever down. So, please listen, you need to take him to the vet first thing in the morning because he is seriously sick and he can die from this.

I would definitely take the kitten to the veteranarian. It sounds like a viral eye infection probably caused by the kitten licking its paws
and rubbing its eyes the other eye got infected.
Most likely the kitten will get antibiotics to treat it.

Didn't a Vet check him out? Most Humane Societies claim to have a Vet check out the pets they Adopt out. The one in my town has a Vet and they have a spay, neuter policy, that is included in their adoption policy.
take the kitten to a Vet for a check up.

Kitty's natural defenses are probably down from changing locales. Probably something in your air that his immune system is disagreeing with. If your kitty is anything like mine when i got her from HS, prepare for a lot of runny noses and sniffles from him for at least 2 weeks...if it goes any later than that, take him in to the vet and get him vaccinated. For now, just use cotton balls soaked with warm water and gently dab.

either allergies or a cold. it could also be brought on by the sudden change of environment. Talk to a vet about this one. Odds are it's nothing, but check to make sure.

I would not wait to take your new baby to the vet. Feline upper respiratory infection is probably what he has but those can also be symptoms of Feline Distemper which has very low survivability rate... get him in now.
Antibiotics will probably take care of it but he needs to be seen as soon as possible....
Good luck!

Keep him warm but not too warm.No drafts. Its pretty common for kittens to have eye gunk but it may have a cold. With a warm wet wash cloth,,slowly & gently soften up the gunk & remove from eyes.Do NOT pry on eyes to open.Do not give cats milk.Water only & if very young,,watery baby rice cereal.
Thx for adopting from a shelter.Bless your heart & Merry Christmas! ;O)
