If you are in the Military, there is always a chance you will be deployed to a warzone, no matter what MOS you get. Im not saying its garunteed, but dont join the Army thinking that you wont.
If you do go to Iraq (see you there buddy) chances are you wont be going on patrols or anything like that, with your MOS. You might be aiding with training the Iraqi Army or something like that.
Remember, no matter what MOS you get, you are a soldier first and foremost. Joining the Army means service to your country on and off the battlefield.

The closest job title I can think of for 'multimedia illustrator' in the Army is Psychological Operations. In psyop you create multimedia presentations to let the local population know the messages your command is trying to send to them. Score high enough on the ASVAB, and you would most likely get that job, as they're short on psyop people.
I suspect that DOD doesn't employ illustrators period. They contract out to KBR or some other such firm.
Bear in mind that everyone in the military, regardless of branch of service or specialty, is going to either Iraq or Afghanistan these days. That's how overextended we are at the moment. On the other hand, many people never leave the base once they get there and therefore aren't really at risk.
And disregard these people bitching about how you should love your country if you join the military, yadda yadda yadda. Most people join for the college money, job training, etc. If you want to help your family out, it's not a bad route to go. It's far better than busting your butt at Mickey D's or Wal-Mart for minimum wage. Or enslaving yourself to the college financial aid loan companies.

multimedia illustrator, 25M MOS, is a great job. You will probably be assigned to a reserve unit (most 25Ms are reserve, a few active duty and most of them are stationed at Fort Bragg, PsyOps) and if you deploy you will probably be in an airconditioned shop with your little computer and lots of top secret information. If your record is squeeky clean you can go far with the MOS in the Army and the civilian job market isn't bad either.
Good Luck

No matter what you do, if you join the army as a private, you have a chance to be shipped out. I have a relative who is in army, but he went to Texas A&M for ROTC. They didn't send him anywhere during 4 years in college, they paid for almost everything. After he graduated, he became an officer and he had never seen a real combat. Still, he told me he could get shipped out to Iraq. He told me he can't expect that he would stay out of combat zone forever. If you are joining the army, you have to be prepare to enter the combat zone at anytime since you are not the one who will decide whether you will be in there or not. If you decide to become an officer through ROTC, then you might not see any real combat fight.
An ex-marine man told me once when I thought about joining marine when I was in high school, he said, "if you don't want to be there, you life can be hell, so you want to make sure you really want to be there." He was drafted to fight in Vietnam war. From his experience, he just fought, but he saw people who did not want to be there. They were miserable duration of combats.
If you are joining, then I thank you for protecting our contry, but you want to make sure that is what you really want to do. There is always some sort of wars and you can get into bad or dangerous situations. If you believe you can make it through, then military life can be a right direction I think.
Good luck to ya.

First of all, do NOT trust what the recruiter(s) tell you. They will make every assurance to you, tell you exactly what you want to hear, to get you to enlist. Once you do, your *** is theirs, and you can't do anything about what you were promised.
Second, why in the name of whatever god you might pray to would you want to join the army to become a multimedia illustrator? Do you think that they will somehow be a better outlet for your creativity? A better employer to assist you in developing your artistic side? A better provider of income than the private sector? You would be better off taking out student loans and paying those off for a decade, you still would pocket better money than the US Army pays. Oh it's possible to make better money in the military, but you do not sound willing to do what is necessary to come close to a higher pay grade.
In short, stay the hell out of the Army, or any armed forces, unless you feel compelled to do so out of patriotic duty. And if that is the case, be fully prepared to leave your powerpoint and the left side of your brain behind.

If you are going to serve your country join and you may be assinged
any where the army need you, you may not have any choice. Just to help your family you can look for the job in your field, just post your resume on line. There is always a chance you can get killed or die any where but dying while serving your country is an Honor.

Check it out, if you go active you run a 99% chance of being deployed to the Raq or the Stan. But, with a job like that you would probably never leave one of the cushy camps (Sadam's old palaces). This means no car bombs or ied's. You may encounter the random mortar fire, but that doesn't happen much any more and it will be so far away you will barely hear it explode. So, you do a year in an exotic locale raking in all kinds of extra pay and not to mention all of your pay is tax free while deployed. But, hurry, before they start pulling all of the support people out of the Raq leaving it to just us snake eaters.

If you are concerned about fighting in Iraq, the Navy or Air Force would be a better fit for you.
However, if you want to be an illustrator, going to college would be better for you.

If the recruiter told you you would become a multimedia illustrator, that was just to get you to sign-up Once they got you they will do what ever is best for them, not you. As far as going to Iraq, today the senate said they were going to ask for 30,000 more troops. Maybe you could try to go to a junior college.

Join the Air Force for the same reason!
If that does not work, then the army! Request training in the field that you want before you sign on the line. Then they must train and use you in that field! If it is not a contract, do not fall for the crap!
I did 24 years, requested ADP/Computers, spent 22 years in that field of work only!
You idea is sound! Just get the contract.
