Before I start to describe whats going on, I would just like everyone to know that i have already called and made an appointment about this with my doctor. That being said, I wanted to ask if anyone has ever had this happen or heard of it happening to someone else. It has been going on for a few months now and happens a few times a month. When I begin to doze off at night when I am falling asleep, I will get jerked back to consciousness very startled like I stopped breathing. It will happend repeatedly through the night and there have been instances where i don't fall asleep until six or later in the morning. It never happens when i sleep during the day though. I don't think its apnea bc i have kind of researched it and most people don't know they have apnea and it happens during REM. I have never heard of this happening to anyone else so if anyone knows anything about it I would really like to hear. Thanks!

apnea is not self checked.
It's electro checked during an 8 hr sleep study.
but does not sound like apnea.

sounds more like peripheral neuropathy or restless leg syndrone.

Neurologist should exam you.
do nerve testing.....
you should sked an appt.

a gen MD cannot do this type testing.

It sure sounds like apnic episodes.

People respond differently to apnea. It is not unusual to awaken during an episode of apnea, even if you are in a REM cycle. You can have sleep studies done to pin point your problem.

Good luck.

Well, my tonsils were swollen for almost a year, and when my fiance came to visit me he realized that i stopped breathing a lot during my sleep because my tonsils were blocking my airway. It scared him so bad he yelled at my doctor for not making me an appointment to get them taken out a long time ago. I got them out and no longer have the problem.

This is a very unusual case. I have also experienced this sometimes and I cannot seem to wakeup though I want to. I have barely seen any research on this. My religion says an evil spirit is upon u so pray and it won't touch you any longer.
I find it helpful. I no longer feel this sensation so often.
