ICE is indeed Immigration and Customs Enforcement--what used to be the Immigration & Naturalization Service. It is a federal agency that enforces immigration laws and customs laws. (Customs governs a whole range of things, but most commonly what you can & cannot bring into or take out of a country from another country.)

As for the other meaning of ICE, there's been an e-mail circulating for some time suggesting that people enter ICE (In Case of Emergency) into their cell phones with the number of someone they'd like to have contacted in that situation. However, I wouldn't rely solely on that method. Put a little card in your wallet or purse with contact information on it--it's less likely to be lost than the tiny cell phones most of us carry. Or, if you have medical issues such as allergies or diabetes, wear a MedicAlert bracelet or necklace with that information and your contact information.

Hope this helps.

Nah, ICE doesn't stand for customs- lol. It's said that Emergency and Police authority are all well aware of this new acronym but I was skeptical.
ICE stands for In Case of Emergency.
It is recommended that everyone with a cell phone enter the word ICE in their cell phone address book listing who to contact In Case of Emergency.
Since most have cells this gives first responders the best opportunity to track family members when necessary.

They are correct on the correct on the name of that agency.

As far as the ICE goes in your cell phone, it's a great idea. I've worked two horrible car wrecks where we have had to use that to contact family.

Just in case you cell phone gets smashed, put a little card in your wallet or stapled to your vehicle registration. Those are places the cops are going to look if you are dead or unconscious.

Immigration Customs Enforcement. Since 911. INS, Customs, and Border Patrol have merged as one central unit, although separate in name.
