I'm a little weary of Windows Vista as I'm pretty settled in with XP. I have a ton of programs and I'm wondering if Windows Vista will make me compromise this? I have a relatively new laptop with a pretty good graphics card X1600 256 mb hypermemory to 512 mb. I'm really starting to hate windows as it has so many wacky quirks and it messes up on me in the most inopportune times. Should I upgrade on January 30th?

Better wait for the product to mature further. Early technology adapters usually pay a high price (some measure it in money, others measure it in time, effort, peace of mind, etc.).

Also, while win32 programs might work, drivers might not. Check the hardware you plan to use Vista on, if it has the necessary Vista drivers. For laptops, you can check with your vendor if Vista supports it. For example, my laptop is an HP Pavilion that has a Windows Vista-ready sticker but I'm not so keen on upgrading to Vista yet.

Vista will run all your software fine, but that doesn't mean you have to make the switch right away. I myself will be waiting a little while before upgrading to Vista just because there is no urgent need for it. It won't offer me anything that I can't do with XP. Personally, I will be waiting for more 64 bit support until I switch to Vista because then it will really offer me something I don't have with XP.
