did the pigs deserve that?

Jesus could not send the pigs to the abyss (hell) because it was/is not yet time for the final judgement day when all the demons and satan will be cast into hell.

As far as whether or not the pigs deserved it, its kind of a moot point. Pigs were considered "unclean" by Jews (much the same way most people think of flies as being unclean, just to make a point) and therefore sending the demons into them wasn't wrong, at least to those of the Jewish community. The pigs didn't suffer, they just died. Those who were keeping the pigs suffered the loss of their herd, probably because herding pigs was considered sinful.

In most cases even seemingly simple events/words/phrases, etc., in the Bible have other hidden "jewels" in them, which explains why Jesus didn't simply cast the demons out. God's Word is holy, and as such can only be fully understood by revelation, not merely by logic.

Jesus, the Son of our ever-merciful Lord, was showing compassion to the demons and instead of driving them into Hell, made an agreement with them to enter the pigs. As demons only want to destroy, the demons took the lives of the pigs by running off a cliff.

To answer your other question on a more personal level, no. The pigs probably did not deserve it. lol

The demons NEED new hosts, Jesus do NOT want the demons to inhabit humans again.

Since pigs are not Kosher, the demons can safely inhabit them without being in a human, unless someone decided to eat pigs.

As for why did he not tell them to go to hell? Not all 'demons' go to hell.

Demons should not be in people and pigs should not be in Israel. Jesus took care of both at once. Since the demons knew that Jesus was going to cast them out of the man, they pleaded with Him not to command them to depart into the abyss, but to let them enter the swine instead. Since it was not yet time to judge the demons, Jesus permitted this.

They besought him (the demons besought Christ) that he would not command them to go out into the deep (hell). - Luke 8:31 But rather into the swine. Pigs were considered unclean according to Jewish law, so weather or not they deserved it is irreverent.

The demons themselves answered your question: "Have you come to torment us before the time?" (Matthew 8:29) So there is an appointed time for judgment - for them, and for you.
