Following world war II there was a power vacuum in asia due to the destruction of Japan and the weaking of Russia with the European conflict. The Us feared that China would dominate the region and move into Korea to limit there expansion. China countered by moving into North Korea and the negotiation for Peace created the two Koreas.
Viet Nam was a much bigger mistake. US policy makers viewed all communism as the same, no difference since between maoist, stalinists, etc. In additional there was oil reserves in Viet Nam controlled by Shell Oil. The country was seen as strategically located near shipping lanes and we were at war with communism. Fifty thousand Americans died for questionable reasons. The occupation of Viet Nam feels more like Iraq than Korea.

to try to control the area and to make money on the war. if billions are spent on a war. someone is making a lot of money from the war. Just who do you think that could be that is profiting form the war.

Basically because they were part of the war against communism (Cold War). In both wars, the enemies of the US were communists.
