Windows Media Player will play .avi files. The download is free. The full version software I prefer is Adobe Premiere.

If you want an easy method, I would say go with "VLC". It's free and practically supports almost all the .avi forms (in tech jargon, "codecs") out there.

VLC also has a built in converter. Don't know how well it works though..i've never tried.

If you want to use say, Windows Media Player, you'll have to get the codec yourself. The easiest way would be to download a codec pack like K-Lite ( http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_Lite_Codec_Pack.htm ), but if you have software that conflicts with a codec, going that route may cause your computer to go unstable.

I think u should download codecs. When u will download codecs and extract them u can then able to run most of such extensions in Window Media Player. ffdshow codecs are the best codecs.
