Well, I'm not a 20-year old but I am a female and usually travel to Thailand alone and have never had a problem. If you don't hang out in the most unsavory parts of town then Thailand is quite safe. But of course you need to use common sense and keep your valuables safe, just like anywhere. I've been to Thailand 8-10 times and have never had a problem. Get a lonely planet, read the Dangers and Annoyances sections and check VirtualTourist website for other travelers' warnings and advice. Most of the things you read about won't happen to you but if you know about them you can avoid them and scams better. Better to be aware than ignorant. Bus and train stations and crowded places are places where pickpockets like to hang out in most countries, so be vigilant when you are in places like that. but I've never had a problem. Thai people are very peaceful and kind so bodily harm I wouldn't worry about. I love Thailand, and wouldn't hesitate to go there alone. I always stay in the Khao San Road area and have never had trouble. It's a backpacker's hangout, cheap and lots to do in the area. Don't let fear stop you from going, just be sensible and careful and you'll have a good time. There is so much cool stuff to see there! (And great shopping....)

Thailand is a pretty safe country. It is ok for a 20 year old to travel alone but you need to possess common sense and some street smarts. I suggest you get a copy of the Lonely Planet Guide for Thailand and plan your trip accordingly. You will find inexpensive hotels and hostels throughout the Kingdom. You can eat for $2-3 per day in spite of the poor exchange rate currently. If you have the blessing of all your important family members, pack your bags, get your passport and buy your ticket....

I can't see why you would have any problems. Stay away from drugs. Don't get involved with unsavary people. Kho San road is really safe at night. You will into all kinds of people. Some of them a really nice others are a bit creepy.

Find decent accomidation with a sucure room key and safety deposite box. Watch out for pickpockets these people are usually away from the main drag avoid alleyways. If a deal appears to be too good to be true odds are it is. Stay away from Jewlery shops.

If you can travel in Manhattan by yourself, you'd be safe in Thailand. There're some precaution things to do like don't dress too revealing, carry too much cash or precious decoration. Certain spots in the city is not safe during the night.
Act as if you are travelling in the US and you'd be fine.
Generally, the Thai people are nice people. Just try to turn their nice side towards you if possible.

Quite so. Just exercise common sense in your daily outings or contacts with people as you would in any metropolis. There will be unsavoury characters trying to take advantage of you and such attempts are easily seen through. Do not be too trusting of the locals or fellow tourists and avoid places with bad reputations, especially at night. I think you will enjoy Bangkok.

I have to say NO because Thailand is too dangerous for 20 yr old girl traveling by herself. You might never know what could happen.

I think it is safe for you to travel in Thailand solo provided that you need more info regarding your safety &security. My Australian friends visited and traveled in our country safely but she came with her sister, both are in their 20's. So it's wise to have a good friend with you. However you can find further info, just in case, to know more before the travel. Please visit our official TAT website below, I think, so that you're well-informed and well-prepared.

Welcome, enjoy your stay and travel safely.

To promthep(BK)? not really. Some of the more touristy areas like Koh Samui, Koh Phi Phi, or some of the nicer resort spas around phuket(STAY AWAY FROM PATONG) would be a better choice. It also depends on your nationality, but I still wouldn't risk it. I, myself, don't even like to go around BK by myself and I'm an old fart and have been traveling to thailand for 20 years.
