Thou Shall Not Covet

I think this will answer the question.
Answer: I think Job 31:11-12 (NLT) sums up lust quite nicely, "For lust is a shameful sin, a crime that should be punished. It is a devastating fire that destroys to hell. It would wipe out everything I own." Just think about the definition of lust: 1) Intense or unrestrained sexual craving, or 2) An overwhelming desire or craving (Source: The American Heritage Dictionary). Now try and reconcile this definition with verses such as Exodus 20:14, 17 (NLT), "Do not commit adultery. . . Do not covet your neighbor’s house. Do not covet your neighbor’s wife, male or female servant, ox or donkey, or anything else your neighbor owns," or Matthew 5:28, "But I say, anyone who even looks at a woman with lust in his eye has already committed adultery with her in his heart."

Remember this also. We are all sinners and have only to ask for foregivness. This doesn't mean that we can go sleep with someone everyday, who is not our spouse, and then say "God foregive me" and he will.

Depends on how conservative or liberal you are.

Having them by choice is one thing, having them due to your sinful nature is another. The latter you must accept, but do your best to grow beyond and not let it make you feel guilty.

Acting on them I believe would almost always be a choice, and probably not a wise one.

The problem with your question is that what you may be defining as "lustful thoughts" may not always be lustful thoughts, but you call them that and feel they are that because someone told you to or you are being hard on yourself.

I am not discounting lustful thinking, but there may be an off-chance that not every thought you are having is a lustful one.

Jesus said whoever looks upon a woman to lust after her, has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
God sees our thoughts, and the bible says that He wiil judge not only our deeds, but also our words and thoughts.
The good news is that Jesus Christ already paid the fine for our sins against God, and if we are trusting in Him, our sins are completely removed. We get heaven, even though we desrerve hell.

Be careful asking advice on Christianity to a blog like this. Better to ask a trusted person who you KNOW, knows the bible. Lust is on of the seven deadly sins, but it is also part of our nature to lust.
Lust is not only sexual, but can be lust of power, money, material things; anything that keeps your heart unfocused on Jesus, and your relationship with him. Talk to a knowledgeable theologian (Pastor, youth minister) and they can show you what the bible says. This question could take weeks to answer.

27 “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28 But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. Matthew 5:27-28

“You shall not commit adultery." Exodus 20:14

Lusting is breaking one of the Ten Commandments.

10 For whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one point, he is guilty of all. James 2:10

It is a sin to have lustful thoughts. It's still a sin too act on them. The bible says you reap what you sow, so if you have such thoughts then you should "shoot" them down with the word of God. If you don't you are likely to act on those thoughts.

Thoughts are just that, thoughts it's when you act on those thoughts that it becomes a problem...

James 1:12-15
12Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.
13Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man:
14But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.
15Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.
(KJV)

1 Pet 2:11
11Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;
(KJV)

It depends upon what you mean by lustful thoughts. In Matthew chapter 5 Jesus said that anyone who looks upon a woman to lust after her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. Of course you have to apply some common sense to that statement. Obviously a man can look upon his wife with sexual desire and a single man could look upon a woman whom he is dating with the intention of staying sexually pure until he is married without committing the sin of "adultery" or "fornication" in his heart.

Lust in and of itself is not a sin. A person could "lust" meaning having a strong desire to be more like Jesus. If someone has a strong desire to commit something that they know is a sin and they don't take that thought captive then they are sinning in their heart. James gives the progression of sin in chapter one where he says that each person is enticed by their own sinful desires and when a person fails to reject sinful thoughts and starts to meditate upon committing a sin then pretty soon it leads to the physical act and "sin is born". Then if that person continues in that lifestyle sin becomes full grown and leads to death.

well...the thought itself is not the problem it is when you act on the thought.....one needs to have control over the flesh ..we are to take every thought into captivity that leads us into sin and not act upon them...but if we do if we are truly repentive and turn away from the action then we are forgiven.....but that in no way means one can commit an act of sin and then repent knowing you will do it again and have no remorse for the sin.....we are not perfect and we all fall at times ...it is what we do when we fall that matters...
