After the defeat of Germany in the first World War also there was no concept of Super Power among community of Nations but with the formation of the League of Nations some Member States were playing lead role in managing the world affairs. But after the second World war was over, there appeared a struggle for Power blocks under two central points and the world was divided into two halves on ideological lines. And the Cold War days started.

Bipolar world politics continued till China came out of its self imposed isolation during Kissinger and Nixon days and Pin pong politics. And the world acknowledged that there were two Super Powers and one potential Super Power called China. Now with globalization and the Information Revolution India, Japan, China are also viewed as formidable countries with sufficient potentiality in terms of Human resources, natural resources, internal market strength and trade balance to emerge as Super Powers by 2020, if not earlier.

The concept didn't exist before World War I. There have been nations which you could call "super powers" before WWI (like the Roman Empire, the British Empire and France) but the term Super Power wasn't used for them.
The first Super Powers were the USA and the Soviet Union, and they have been dominating the world politics throughout most of the 20th century.

The USA is the only super power in existence today. There are some emerging super powers, like the European Union, China and India, but they do not yet have the political, economical and military ability to be considered super powers.

Wars can in effect be a huge investment. Better for winners than losers usually (although note that the UK was richer than Germany in the 1940s, and the UK WON and Germany LOST, yet Germany became richer than the UK by the mid-1950s). During WWII, radar, plastic surgery, atomic energy, etc, were invented. The US was the world's leading power from around 1918, and would still be so in 2007, without WWII, although perhaps not by as huge a margin. The US, after all, has a great, democratic, meritocratic system which ensures happy, rich citizens and which only a few other countries have had for as long a time.

The concept of a super power didn't come into play until post-World War 2. In World War 1, you had empires (British, Austro-Hungarian, German, Russian, and the Ottoman to name a few). Then after World War 2, you had the U.S. and the Soviet Union until 1992, when the United States became the only super-power left standing.

Carthage and Rome was probably the first clash of super powers. There have been many through the ages. Greek states at times have been able to claim that title. Atlantis may have been the first super power. China has often been a super power and was the first to use gunboat diplomacy. Though the ships had no cannon but were huge floating castles basically with massive armies aboard. Persia, UK, Spain are some others to name some of many.

Before World War 1, I would say England was the true superpower of the world. Today, the United States is the only superpower in the world, but don't be surprised if China becomes one in twenty or thirty years. they have nuclear weapons,a booming economy, and a army that's 300 million strong.

Nope. Remember that prior to WWI, there were several European empires out there. The British were the most powerful one, what with the greatest industrial, maritime, financial and territorial assets. But the other Euros provides lots of coutnerweights all over place.

It wasn't until the Cold War popped up and the US and the USSR were each the beacons of different ideologies.
