Dachshunds were bred to kill vermin... dogs with that job are always a bit on the feisty side and without professional help, you will have your hands full. Even though you've had dogs all your life, sometimes an outside opinion can clue you in to things you didn't even know you were or weren't doing and can change things drammatically. Give a professional a call! Good luck - many of the Dachshunds that come in to our clinic need to be muzzled just to look at them. They can be handsfull!

Caesar Milan has an excellent book for every ailment and bad behaviors for dogs. He is called the dog whisperer. This dog is going to require a different approach. Most behaviors can be changed with the right tools. Go to Amazon.com for a great price. Barnes and Nobles are pricey. Have a Doxy Holiday.

Let me tell you something! I have also owned dogs my whole life! I got my first dachshund about a year and a half ago! Also a female! I have tried everything to train her! She is very loving gentle and loyal! But as for the smart side i don't think she has one! She does not follow any commands! She attacks our 60 lb German Shepard! She even had gone potty in her crate at times! I think that they just believe that they are in control! She also does not like any strangers being people or animal! I have had pit bulls rottweilers mastiffs lots of large "aggressive" dogs that grew to be sweet smart and obedient! But my Maggie is impossible! I think it just may be the breed! I love her to death but sometimes she is just so stupid i don't know what to do with her! Good luck with her they are very loyal towards their owners but i don't think they have much intellect!

i think you mean 'ornery dachshund', not 'honory doxin'. i would suggest going to an animal trainer or behaviorist, because they can point out specifically the things you might be doing wrong and how to correct them so that you and your dog can have a happy, healthy relationship. ask your veterinarian if they have any phone numbers of trainers and behaviorists in your area.

Fortunately, our little guy isn't too bad, but he doesn't always tolerate our Border Collie puppy and will occasionally put her into place.

I'd say to maybe consider getting some behavioral trainer to assist you in overcoming this type of undesirable behavior.
