If you're talking about a negative side effect, I'd have to say knowledge. Knowledge of the human condition, of the universe. They say ignorance is bliss, and I think they're right. I'm not so conceited as to believe that I am a great thinker or anything, but I'm not exactly stupid, and I take a strong interest in the world around me. And what I see is incredibly depressing. There's a lot of beautiful and awe-inspiring stuff, too, but it never seems to balance out the crap we wade through every day.

I'm off topic, here. Basically, I think the worst part of intelligence is the knowledge that comes with it.

If by intelligence you mean being smart.. then I think that the greatest side effect of intelligence is that sometimes intelligence tend to make peope try to find the most complex solutions while ignoring the simple ones. People take life to seriously... sometimes dumb people tend to be happier than smart people (take Homer for example:) I think Sigmeund Freud said it best "there are only two ways of being happy in this life: one is acting like an idiot and the other one being the idiot

The greatest sign of 'real' intelligence or wisdom is unconditional love, and that happens when the knowledge of the Self takes root in our being that is to say when we become because we know who we are within.

That is when real wisdom of the Self shines through us.

The rest is just an external attempt to mimic internal intelligence when we do not know how to access it, or what we use to cover up our sense of unworthiness and when we try to feel self important in life, all signs that we still have not accessed the real intelligence that lies within us all, as 'the intelligent one' lies within us as us. The journey is about accessing Him within not without.

Still waters run deep, this only shows that only a truly enlightened person can remain still in the din of life, as rest of us try to make noises, in order to be heard. A truly wise man doesn't want or need to be heard as he hears himself clear.
