Mostly cause they make "door knobs" to fit into doors.
One good option is like the doors at the local supermarket. Just walk up to them and they open automatically. No knobs required.

If you could just push wouldn't that make it alot easier to get your house broken into and to keep the cold out in the winter?

To activate the door latch,which holds the door shut when you close it, and when turned, to pull the latch plunger towards the door when you want to open it.

the 'lock' holds the door in place so it doesn't just swing open.
