Get a covered trash can, or put set mouse traps in the can when the puppy goes to stick her head in the can the traps will snap and scare the puppy causing her to quite, but it doesn't hurt her.

The easiest way is simply to deny the pup access to the trash. Put it in another room, in the pantry, in a cabinet under the sink, outside -- anywhere the puppy can't get to it. There's no need to mess around with anything else. Trash is dangerous for your puppy.

Either make the trash can inaccessible or put boundaries on the puppy using a child's safety gate. Also, a fly swatter and a firm "No" in consistent training works wonders. Just the sight of it is a deterrent.

DO NOT HIT A DOG WITH A NEWSPAPER FOR ANY REASON!!!!! That shows a complete failure in training on your part. I know you haven't done it but it was suggested.

Here's my suggestions
Put the garbage in either a "dog proof" bin, or in a cupboard with a childproof lock on it. Or, put the garbage outside in a bin, or put the garbage can up on the counter so the puppy can't reach it.

FYI: Dengue and Black Plague are diseases spread by insects (mosquitos and fleas respectively) not from feeding garbage to dogs. IF you are going to spout off information, at least do a search and get your facts straight.

Either have those tall cylindrical aluminum step on trash bins or put the trash on top of the kitchen counter while working and finally underneath the sink cabinet.

you could start putting the food in the garbage disposal....or perhaps keep the trash can in the pantry. you can't monitor the dog 24/7 and there is a chance that he may get into it while you aren't there. it will find a way to knock it over and get the lid off if given enough time.

that is entirely your fault ,what is organic material doing in your trash ,people who do this cause diseases like denge, cholora, the black plague etc .

70 % of all contamination comes from people mixing food left over and other organic trash together, this is an ecologically criminal offence.

the correct way is to have a small compost heap and feed it all your organic trash (this does not smell ,if you cover it now and again with a bit of sand or leaves)

and if the pUppy is eating from the trash why dont you feed this stuff to the puppy instead of putting it in the trash (waste of resources)

so it is not your puppy who needs to learn what is right ---it is you

this is not the correct way to expect to go to heaven, that goes for everybody who has answered so far

Get a bigger trash can.
Or keep it away form your puppy.

What ever you do!
Don't do any thing to traumatize the cute little thing.
