Our little deerface chihuahua was about 11 years old when she was diagnosed with heart problems. She went through that spell of coughing and the hard breathing too.
We took her to the vet, and he told us that there really was nothing he could do, that all we could do was make her comfortable as possible, because she was terminal.
Well to make a long story short, the advanced rheumatism, the coughing, the heavy breathing took its toll. It was a very painful time watching her suffer with it as she did, and knowing that there was nothing we could do about it .
Christmas morning, we found her in front of the kitchen stove. She had died quietly in the night.
It was just like losing a family member. Afterwards, we pondered over the fact that we maybe should have put her down and saved her so much misery. But when you become so attached to an animal like this, you really don't make very good decisions.
I cannot help you with this because this is a personal decision that only you can make. But I certainly can appreciate how you feel, because I've been there.

I think you should bring your dog to the doc asap. A 11 yr old CHH is rather old and it is natural that dogs like human will get health problems with age. He is showing signs of fatigue when he does not greet you when you come back and coughing and heavy breathing could be due to some infection or mild respertory distress....better goto a vet soon for a checkup. Even if its nothing, at least you feel better. Good luck

You need to take your dog to the vet because he is not being himself. He may just have a case of kennel cough, or it may be more serious. My best advice if you have the money call an emergency vet and take him. In case something is wrong you want to do everything you can do. I just lost a pet so I know what its like to be worried about an ill pet. She was find one day and the next thing we knew she had cancer and died 1 day after we got the results.

It may be something serious.
Unfortunately they don't last forever.
The best thing you can do is take him to the vet and find out.
It may be as simple as antibiotics.
GOOD LUCK!
