If the grant you are interested in is from a public source, then you can ask for copies of successful applications from a prior cycle. I wrote a National Recreational Trail Grant and had it funded. I did it as a volunteer with no help. Usually a city will hire a full time employee to write one. It nearly killed me, but I did it.

If you are writing a grant to a foundation or a corporation, I have found advice to improve my request.

You need to write about the reason for the grant, who, what and where, especially why. Who's to receive the grant. That should give you a starting point.

It would be good to seek out a teacher that can advise you on it. Also, find out as much about the grant as you can, especially about who has won the grant before, what their proposals were like, and what the organization that put the grant together is looking for. Finally, document as much as you can about your proposal, going one step short of completing the thing would help. Have as much work in your portfolio as you can muster that shows that you have the ability and desire to finish the project proposed as you can.
