I think she's nuts too. She doesn't have the right to tell other people what to let their kids read. My kids love those books, and so do I.

Another case of a 'special interest group' trying to force their views onto everyone else. Harry Potter isn't much different than many Shakespeare plays - which have magic and witches too.
If she doen't want her children to read the Potter books, all right. But banning books never solved anything and I dare say she can't identify one child that became a witch after reading or seeing a Harry Potter book/movie. Kids know this stuff is fantasy.

I just don't think that if this woman who obviously can't tell Harry Potter is a fictional character & the books are about a fantacasy world.Should tell other parents what their children can or an not read.
Plus I think this woman should focous on her own sense of reality, her children. Before she shoves her own beleifs down some one elses throat.

Wow, and I thought the Huckleberry Finn controversy was bad...
some people just love to complain and live off the attention. I agree, what a nut. There are FAR worse things mothers should be worrying about right now..like the music their kids listen to, the TV shows they watch, ect. And she is complaining about a book that probably most every child in the world has heard of...

I don't think she's a nutjob. I think of her as a mother who is worried that the books are having a bad influence on her children if her kids read them). Her problem is that she doesn't realize that the books aren't the problem. She just doesn't think of talking to her kids and explaining the difference between fact and fiction. If she doesn't allow her kids to read the books, its her and her children who will face the consequences. Harry Potter books capture the imaginations of children, and not allowing them to read is just encoureging (misspelled?) them to not read books and preventing their imaginations from developing. Sadly its not her loss, its the loss of her children. And yes, she doesn't have the right to tell others what to read, not that she'll succeed anyways.

Harry Potter has gotten Millions of children across the world to read and open their imaginations to bigger possiblities. It's freaking fiction and people who are afraid that it will turn there children to witches need to leave 16th century salem and join us in the 21st century.

i agree with you. i really think that the harry potter books are so much deeper than just witches and wizards. it teaches kids that ordinary people can do extraordinary things, teaches them good vs. evil and right vs. wrong, that love is the strongest force, and at the same time encourages kids' imaginations! i love harry potter, and i definitely plan on reading them to my kids when i have kids!

Your thinking is exactly what I am thinking Kathy, so we do think alike, don't we - one common factor for us to consider to be together!
We are in a world of open democratic society in most of it if not the whole and people should exercise their rights judiciously without encroaching upon the rights of others!
