I know a lot of people are telling you, land or sea. but, MARINES GO ON SHIPS TOO. They are a department of the navy. I was in the navy, I was airdale. I work right along side marines every day, doing the same exact job. Really, its you who needs to decide. don't let the stereotypes fool you. There are such boats as LHD, or GATORS that are pretty much manned by marines. And the boot camp really isn't that much harder. All the branches are basicly the same, they just need to teach certain aspects. You do more swimming and mass cas training in the Navy's and more combat training in the Marine's. I actually thought boot camp was a blast. You just have to play their games and you'll be fine.

Navy and Marines

That was my choice also! I chose navy because of the dress blues (men's uniform) I thought I'd get to wear! Turns out women have ugly dress blues! All depends... what are your interests? Do you want to fight in the war(def marines)? Navy is a safe haven compared to marines right now (I joined prior to all this). Are you are joining because of benefits (ie college, get away from parents, travelling)? What I'd suggest is to go to both recruiters and tell them you are considering. Get a whole lot of info, but do not tell either that you are thinking about the other. Tell them you need time to decide, hopefully that'll keep them from pushing. And don't give either your phone number or address till you have made a choice, they will bother you to no end! Oh and don't know if any of your friends are grunts, but they are the nastiest!! Had lots of fun in the navy, saw half of the world in less than 2 years!! Talked to marines while I was cranking, and they had been shipped to Japan just to sit until we picked them up, then only saw 3 ports while on board. We dropped them off, and continued seeing more! Both have different mind sets as well. Navy officers are all "high and mighty" attitude. While the marine officers onbaord were wanting to get their own food instead of being served and preffered eating with enlisted. (This was the only Marine encounters I had to talk with them about how their side worked!)

Both are steeped in Tradition. I chose the Navy and saw so many places I can't list them all.

You will probably get more practical training in the Navy (use-full in civi world).

Once a Marine always a Marine. Those guys have a special bond with each other.

Either one would be a great experience.

PS I wasn't allowed in the Marines because I scored too high on the ASVAB So sorry Jarheads :)

My son is in the Navy, loves it, was telling me how he got custom fitted for his protective equipment, like for HAZMAT etc. He said if he-ups, he will get remeasured and if needed will get new equipment.

He said the Marines standard equipment, often they are the discards of the Navy, He is now attached to a Marine unit, says the Navy definitely gets the better deal. His boot camp and A school resulted in 28 college credits, the Navy has changed him definitely for the better, I say Navy all the way (and I was Army!).

depends on what you want to do. if youre looking to pound the ground in infantry then Marines, if you want to be on a ship with a bunch of dudes for a few months a year go Navy. if you want to do mechanical work Air Force, if you want to do spec forces work then Army. i dont pretend to be an expert, but i recommend going into the reserves and working your way through college, youll appreciate the extra $12,000+ a yr when youre an officer and you need to get some life experience before you become a career soldier. i just graduated from college and im about to enlist as an NCO bc i want to do some more dangerous SF and Spec ops stuff, but boobs and beer pretty much summed up my last 4 yrs.

it depends on if you want to fight on land or on water. remember that the Marines are under the dept of the navy so you could be deployed on board a ship too. I'm from a navel family also my father is a mustang {joined enlisted but commissioned an officer} and i joined the Marines so i have to say that both are great services. it also depends on what mos your looking to get into. take the asvab and see what is open to you. you might not like one option as much as your other one.

Your choice, investigate the opportunities that each present and make an educated choice. My choice was easy.....6th generation Marine!

By the KGP.....last time I looked the word was spelled useful.....just pointing that out for you, I know that if I had "scored" too high on the ASVAB to join the Marine Corps I would want someone (especially a Marine) help me with my spelling.

Oh, and they actually have "spell check" on this site.

Semper Fi!

Hey,just to let you know my husband is a former marine it's almost been a year since his contract ended and i am relieved..The marines screwed us over so bad.I suggest you try the navy or something else...It's also very hard to pick up rank in the marines, yet anywhere else you pick up rank fast.He was always gone, and when he got hurt overseas they wanted to kick him out and basically told him he's no good to them anymore. He was diagnosed with ptsd and till today he's still hasen't gotten over it..they didn't help him they just gave him drugs and let him talk to a psych...god forbid if you get hurt, they probably won't help you either..If you decide for the marines just remember it's really everyman for himself..good luck!
