I don't want to buy any ski pants. I am only skiing for 2 days. What can I wear from around the house?

To reiterate what people have said:

Please don't wear blue jeans, you will be uncomfortable and you will think skiing as a sport sucks. Don't wear anything made of cotton if you can help it. Ideally, you'll have fleece or other synthetic wool for your inner layers, and gore-tex or anything breathable (unlike seran wrap) and waterproof for your shell. If you have to, cotton sweat pants and a sweater will work for your inner layers, and I'm sure you can find a pair of ski overalls at a thrift store for less than $10.

I am going to be honest with you here. I have skiied and or snowboarded obsessivly for 20 of my 30 years of life. I ski in jeans sometimes. this is only as a joke to make fun of the people that do ski in jeans. You can do it, you will be cold and uncomfortable and worse off you will look like you have no clue what you are doing. But it sounds like that is the case so really what do you care? better to be falling down the hill in jeans than a 5000 dollar boogner ski suit, which I often see. cotton socks...I wear them all the time, rental boots suck but get used to them, you want to wonder if they are too tight when you walk out the door, you feet will adjust but the boots are not mean to be comfortable and they will hurt- deal with it. wear thin socks not thick ones, what ever you do do not wear hiking socks, I usually were dress socks they are the cheapest ski socks available especially wool, but cotton does in a pinch your feet are just a bit more clammy at the end of the day. If you are going back country for a couple of days then you need to worry about good socks and thremal underware, you are going to a resort, if you get cold go in. you are twenty minutes a way from beer, hot coffee and french fries, don't worry. but wear a hat that is important and goggles, they help a ton! and if you can take a lesson, it will also help, if the resort is big enough that you are renting from shops on the hill ask if anyone is willing to teach you a lesson for a couple of hours, this is usually illeagle but many shop boys will do it expect to pay 75 to 100 dollars to the kid instead of 250 to the instructor or more. good luck

Blue Jeans are the most durable! They will absorb the moisture and you'll feel wet. Just bring a change of clothes for the drive home.
I grew up skiing in jeans and they work fine, but snow pants are a 100% better.

Make sure to wear long underwear too and wear loose fitting jeans, otherwise they'll split. I know cause it happened to me and I was forced to buy a ski pants at the ski hill and I never went back to jeans after that! That was 16 years ago...

No blue jeans.

You will want a wind/water proof type of material. Of course, ski pants do that, but if you don't want those, then use any pair of nylon wind pants...like the athletic wear stuff. No blue jeans, or cotton, on the exterior.

Ski pants are designed to keep you warm, and the wind pants won't. So you could wear either long johns under them, or sweat pants, or both if it is cold in your area. Make sure you can fit your nylons over top of the under layer before heading to the hills.

PS: don't forget your mitts or gloves! Don't forget to get lessons! I don't care if it is only for 2 days. A lesson lasts an hour or so...two days of misery falling on your tush and not knowing what you are doing lasts a lifetime. Trust me, I used to ski instruct. I pity those who are too cheap to realize the benefits of one lesson.

Tip on socks: just wear one thin pair...preferably the athletic type that wick sweat. Cotton socks will just collect sweat and make your feet cold, nasty, and miserable.

Have fun!

You'll need the special ski pants.. which are wind proof and water proof, and also synthetic, so if you don't sweat and freeze in your own sweat.

You can get long john to wear under them, but you will have to definitely rent out the pants, jacket as part of the ski gear.

jeans and sweatpants are about the worst thing to wear skiing, even if you have multiple layers on! you need to buy ski pants because they are made to handle the everchanging conditions of the mountains. you don't have to buy the most expensive pants, but you should find something. if you don't want to buy the ski pants, a pair of waterproof shells are alright as well. they sell them at places like EMS and online. trust me, I skiied for 10 years, having those ski pants saved me from possible hypothermia when I was just learing.

man if you don't wanna buy ski pants see if you can borrow some from a buddy. without being windproof and waterproof your time skiing won't be fun. I have skiied since I was 3 years old and have skiied in pretty much everything from shorts on up. Avoid the blue jeans you will freeze you nuts off plus people will point and laugh at you and you will look like a reject.

Nothing cotton and you definitely need ski pants to stay warm and dry. Many mountains rent ski outfits so you should check with the mountain you are going to.
