No sooner had Yeltsin stepped down than Putin repeated the vow to rebuild his country's badly withered military machine. "Our country Russia was a great, powerful, strong state," he declared in January 2000, "and it is clear that this is not possible if we do not have strong armed forces, powerful armed forces."

No, because Rasputin had no political power. He was a soothsayer who had the ear of the Tsaress, previous to the rise of the Bolshevics. Rasputin was killed by members of the royal family and other aristocrats, prior to the Russian Revolution.

But I must admit that some of the things Putin is doing is suspicious.

Tour anaology is way off. Rasputin was merely a sharlatan and a wannabe guru to the Romanov clan, and did curry some influence with them, mainly because he claimed he could cure their son, Alexi, of his leukemia. He was a non-factor in Russian affairs, and was soon assissinated ofter the Bolshevik revolution. Putin on the other hand, is a fomer KGB agent and a strong nationalist who wants to respore Russia to it's former military strength and to become world "player" again. Why do we blame other world leaders for doing the same things we do? Putin is no more "evil" (as some answerer claimed) then Bush. Both of them are simply ultra-nationilists. Also, Putin is in his last term, and is thus a lame duck. He will likely be behind the scenes as Russia rebuilds, but even he is shrewd enough not to make enemies with us. Russia still needs our assistance to climb from the morass of their current decrepit state.
