It's worth giving the owner the benefit of the doubt (that the dog may have run away rather than been abandoned) because Jack Russels are notorious for escaping (their yard, their leash, etc.) They can dig under fences and can actually scale a fence 6 feet high, and are incredibly fast. They don't do it wanting to run away, either - my friend's Jack Russell is constantly getting into the neighbors yard and then goes hysterical trying to backtrack and get back inside her own yard. They are just so curious and feisty and independant that they make silly choices like that.

While it may very well have been abandoned, it would be very nice of you to follow the advice of the other answerers - try taking photos and putting them up on street poles (especially near supermarkets and starbucks, or the dog park if there is one) and put up a posting on craigslist.com and/or petfinder. Also you can call a couple of area shelters and vets or humane society - places people call to report a lost pet.

Very awesome of you to try; I just imagine if my friend's pup went missing, how grateful she'd be to know she'd turned up wagging her tail stump one neighborhood over, ready to come home.

also... not sure if you guys are considering taking the dog with when you move if you don't find the owner - if you don't - maybe the very best thing would be to check on petfinder for the closest Jack Russell terrier rescue group (you can sort by breed and location) and give them a call to see if they can take the dog.

good luck!

Put out fliers that say Found Dog and your contact number. Some local papers will post an ad for free. Have the people that call identify the sex and breed. Then you know the dog belongs to them. Some people will lie to get such a nice dog. Have a great holiday.

Take a picture of him to the animal shelter and put a page about him, where and when he was foind, etc. Also place a found ad in the newspaper. They do it for free wih found ads. I hope you find the owner of get to keep him.

Petharbor.com and petfinder.com have "lost dog" sections - you can look there to see if anyone's missing a dog. Craigslist.org for your area is a good place to post, too.

I would just report it your local shelter, and then place posters in your neighborhood. Also, try a found ad (they are free) in your local newspaper.
