No, quotas are illegal and cause police departments and their officers to falsely charge citizens for traffic offenses they did not commit. Officers used to receive compensation for meeting their quotas. Quotas were done away with long ago. No agency in their right mind would set quotas for their officers. I will tell you this. I'm a supervisor on my department. We work 12 hour shifts. I tell my officers that if they go out on the street and work for 12 hours and don't write at least two or three traffic citations, then something is seriously wrong...like they are real lazy. Unless there is something major going on, I expect that they do their share with writing citations. But that is not a quota.

Yes... But it's a monthly quota... Ever wonder why more tickets are given out at the end of the month rather than the beginning? Speeding tickets is how a lot of small one cow towns fund their city governments... And that's why most speeding tickets are written around the holidays... NOT b/c more people are speeding, but because the urgency to pad the coffers before the year ends...

Well, kinda. The police I know say that nothing is written in stone but if they don't average at least 2 a day they get pulled on the carpet.

Also there are executive directives given out from time to time and the brass will want a high number of tickets written on a certain offense. Such as one time I know about the sheriff was driving around and saw a huge number of head lights out, he put out an order that the field officers would concentrate on head light violations until he didn't think it was a problem anymore.

But they do realize that every once in a while people get the urge to obey the law and there really isn't any tickets to write.

There is not a "quota", but officers are rated on their stats and productivity. The number of tickets they write a month are evaluated to see how they are using their on duty time. Too many tickets can be just as bad as too few. However, there is no set "Quota". Most of the time cops pull traffic in response to public complaints or high incident or accident areas.

You will NEVER get a truthful answer from people who enforce traffic/parking laws, but there is a quota which they must meet to retain their job. Common sense will tell you that if there is no quota, why do meter maids carry a minimum of two ticket books while walking their beats? Some carry more books than this.

In NY State they claim they do not have a quota, however I was married to a trooper for 3 years and YES they do have a quota, if they do not provide X amount of speeding tickets the officers are reprimanded, same with the NYPD

What makes the deference if they did or not because if they wanted to they could ticket everyone on the highway. Can anyone reading this ever remember when they went the speed limit on the highway. You better be glad that there are not more troppers out at once to get you

monthly, yes. people seem to ignore the fact that speeding is a crime and a potentially deadly problem. no one should be complaining about it, if you dont want a ticket keep it within 5-7 mph of the speed limit and you wont have a problem. most people do not realize the risks of driving fast without proper training, you can be the best driver in the world until some idiot cuts you off on the fast lane and you cant decelerate your car in time to avoid an accident at 90mph. driving is a privledge, not a right.

No, it is not a daily thing, but it is monthy, they usually need to feed that quota by the end of the month, so watch out in the last week of the month.
