I reccomend the Canon Powershot A530, for only $139.99 on Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/Canon-PowerShot-Digital-Camera-Optical/dp/B000EMU888/sr=8-1/qid=1166159067/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/102-1592388-7642542?ie=UTF8&s=electronics

I own this camera and I love it. 5 megapixels is more than enough than you need for a personal camera. It also has a 4x optical zoom, which means that you can zoom in a fairly good amount without sacrificing any picture quality. Also, the 1.8 inch screen is a very good size, I find.

Good luck shopping!

Interestingly, there is less difference than you would think between a $150 camera and a $300 camera. The cameras already suggested and Walmart is a good choice to shop.

If you are switching from a film camera to a digital, you need to remember there are some really big differences.

Want to take action shots? a $150 film camera will do a pretty good job of capturing exactly what you see with no blurring (with a little skill). The digital camera? Push the button and expect at least a 1 second delay before the picture snaps. That shot of your son catching the football just before he gets tackled and fumbles the ball becomes a picture of his crushed body and the ball bouncing away.

Want to shoot a series of pictures real quick? Expect about 5 second delay between shots.

There are good sides too. It's much easier to throw the pic on your computer and lighten the image because your flash didn't go off. That happens with both cameras, but for the film to be lightened, you're gonna have to pay a lot extra for custom lab work.

Both types are great and I'd never give up my digital even though I made a living with film for a few years. A really good digital camera (which i don't have) costs a few thousand dollars - but so do the really good film cameras. That digital will shoot as soon as you hit the shutter and will do rapid fire shots as well.

Lots of good choices out there. Remember that you have to include in your purchase, a memory card. These generally don't come with a new camera. A 1 Gig card is what you need. You can spent $20 bucks for a card on sale, or if you want to shoot video, which all of the new cameras can do, you have to buy a "high speed" or "Ultra" card. These are usually twice as much. Normal price is about $79. Look for a sale, and don't pay more than $40.

OK, back to you camera choices. Get a big brand name. Canon is my favorite. Kodak has some decent ones, H.P. is a good choice for the money. I don't care for the cheaper Nikon's. Only buy something on sale. Don't worry about size or mega pixels. Get something you like the feel of. Something solid and easy to grip. Again, get a name brand. Everybody makes one.

Don't be intimidated by the selection available. There really is no wrong choice. Get out there and start taking pictures - have fun!
