Basically, you need an AV receiver to amplify your sound. Buy one of those Home Theater in the Box and you will love it. If you can, buy one of those where the DVD is separate from the AV receiver.

Check the output mode on your dvd player. If it is eqipped with a Dolby Digital or DTS decoder it may be set to multi-channel output. Make sure it's set to stereo.
