The postal carrier is a federal employee and it is illegal for them to accept a monetary gift. They are usually really nice people, and you don't want to risk getting them fired. The list of acceptable gifts is on the USPS website below. If I were a postman, I think I'd appreciate baked goods and some cocoa more than a little cash anyway. Merry Christmas!

I don't know if there is a customary gift, but we always stop our mailman at some point during the holiday season and let him know that we appreciate what he does (we really do).
We ask him in for cocoa and cookies each year but he kindly declines.
So since I love to bake (especially cookies and brownies)
especially during the holidays, I prepare a special box of goodies and it aside for our postman. This he never declines.
MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ONE AND ALL!

You aren't supposed to tip the postman. That practice stopped about 30 years ago. In some cities, the Postmaster General sent out letters telling people to stop.

I think yaya's idea is a wonderful one and if you do feel inclined to spend money, really, a donation to some charitable organization works well. Other than that, note that he is not entitled to a tip. Waiters and bellboys are just about the only people who feel entitled to a tip. Years and years ago I worked in the service industry, and did heavy lifting for customers--never got a tip, never complained.
So yeah, no tip neccessary, throw him a fin or a ten if you really are one of those people who feels obligated to spew out tips.

I know some folks who work for the PO, and every year they have a contest to see who gets the strangest gifts. One year it was home grown kiwis in an egg carton. Another year it was a pack of smokes.
You could give them something like a donation in their name to Habitat for Humanity, the Humane Society, or a gift for a local homeless shelter. If you would rather give them something directly, gift cards are great (they can always do some of their xmas shopping on them).
